Entering the Kaena Point State Park. This area is more commonly known as Yokohama Bay, one of the stories of how this place got its name was that Japanese laborers landed on this very beach to build the OR&L train tracks that wrapped around the island in 1897.

Live long and prosper. Despite some trekkers claiming that the logo for the newly minted branch of the US military was a copy of the Star Trek logo, the delta symbol was first used by the US Army Airforce in 1942. So it seems that Star Trek copied the military and not the other way around.

Our eighth walk around the island covered 10.9 miles in “the heat” that were tempered with intermittent clouds and breezy winds with good company. Post hike meal at Julie’Z, where somebody was asked if they don’t eat Filipino food, as they brought their own tuna salad.

No shopping cart rides today. The plight of the homeless on this side of the island is especially glaring. Not getting into politics and policy, but the fact that the majority of the homeless are Hawaiians is a pretty sad commentary on the state of affairs. If they want to get the ball rolling, they should camp at the State Capitol and all the key political leaders place of residence. That would get national news and force the levers of political power to start moving and actually do something that benefits not just the kanaka maoli but all the local residents that call this place home. Just my two cents.

We escaped the sweltering heat and cooled off by entering the roughly 150,000 year old cave that was once underwater.

The cave reputedly is roughly 450′ deep and there are branching tunnels for those with a yearn to explore and headlamps. We had neither in stock today.

Legend has it that this was once home to the shark god, Nanaue who would lure unsuspecting travelers to his lair and have them for dinner. Not wanting to be shark bait, we soon exited the cool cavern.

Walking on the train tracks of history that once ran from Iwilei to Kahuku. The Aluetian Islands earthquake of 1946 spawned a tsunami that destroyed some of the tracks that was rebuilt, but the sugar workers strike of the same year and the rising use of cars lead the company to shut down operations in 1947. Parts of the railroad still saw use by shipyards, tourists and the military until the 1970s. Today, a small section of the rail in Ewa is maintained and operated by the State and the Hawaiian Railway Society.

Makua Military Reservation

Passing by the 760 acres that the US Army back in 1964 paid the State of Hawaii a dollar to lease the land for 65 years. Talk about a steal, literally and figuratively. The Army wants to keep the valley for training and others want them out when the lease ends in 2029. The history of this valley for military training stretches back to the 1920s, when WW2 struck the islands, the military took total control of the valley and promised that when the war was over, the land would be returned. Broken promises.

Entering the 150,000 year old cave that was formed by sea erosion and is roughly 100′ high and 450′ deep.

Hawaiian legend has it that this cave used to be the home to Nanaue, the Shark God that developed an appetite for human flesh. He would lure unsuspecting travelers into the cave and then kill them and leave them to rot for three weeks before making a meal of them. He was eventually caught and killed.

Another story is that the Hawaiian syndicate used to dispose of their victims here. Their spirits are supposed to still roam and haunt this area.
