We had lunch at this highly recommended place that served gourmet hot dogs. More like a hot mess. I guess I’m more of a Costco hot dog kind of guy. We then walked back to our hotel and picked up our luggage and waited at the bus stop for our ride to Geneva. What looked like a homeless French person approached us and struck up a conversation with us and turns out he was waiting for his Chinese side piece who soon got off another bus. They then provided bi-lingual drama entertainment by yelling at each other in public, actually the woman was the active participant and the man was the passive participant. Robin, Chico and myself soon boarded the bus while Ferlino got lucky and took an earlier bus. We arrived in the town of Geneva where the bus dropped off the passengers at the first stop and was leaving for our destination, the airport. When the mad hatter woke up and ran up and down the aisle “I fell asleep! I need to get off! Stop the bus! Sorry!” We got off at the airport and was going to foolishly walk to our hotel when a well-placed call saved us and we took the shuttle and checked in.

Note: I have been made aware that some hikers have been using my blog as a hiking guide and getting lost on the trails. Please note that this blog was made to document the hike for the crew(s) that did it. That is why some of my comments will seem to have no relevance or meaning to anybody outside of the crew(s) that hiked that trail. My blog was never meant as a hiking guide, so please do not treat it as such. If you find inspiration and entertainment from these hikes, that is more than enough. If you plan on replicating these hikes, do so in the knowledge that you should do your own research accordingly as trail conditions, access, legalities and so forth are constantly in flux. What was current today is most likely yesterdays news. Please be prepared to accept any risks and responsibilities on your own as you should know your own limitations, experience and abilities before you even set foot on a trail, as even the “simplest” or “easiest” of trails can present potential pitfalls for even the most “experienced” hikers. One should also always let somebody know of your hiking plans in case something doesn’t go as planned, better safe than sorry.

Our abbreviated version of the TMB covered a total of 51.73 miles around the massive Mont Blanc that subjectively highlighted the best views and trail experiences. Bravo to the group for starting and finishing strong and more importantly we all did the hike in good company and spirits and all finished safe and sound.

The day had finally arrived as we started on the CliffsNotes version of the TMB. We had eschewed hiking the entire 106 miles circuit that typically takes 8-11 days to complete. Instead we opted on a guided six-day hike that highlighted the “best” of the trail and left the more “mundane” sections out in left field. The TMB trail started for practical and economic reasons to move herds of sheep between the valleys and to facilitate fur trade among the scattered groups of people living in the valleys. Now it serves to move hikers between the valleys.

Our first day on the storied Tour du Mont Blanc trail covered 8.74 miles through the wilderness of the Alps. Somebody inquired as to taking a zero day on the second day. Cost was 270 euros for the taxi. That was roughly $315 dollars. Hard pass. The secret to motivating hikers? Hit ‘em in the wallet.

The bus dropped us off at a stop in town and we dragged our suitcases down the cobblestone and asphalt roads to our pink hotel that started off as an 18th century mill. We checked in and were greeted with “Put your luggage in the dining room” and “Use the bathroom up the street.” What happened to bonjour? Ahh yes, the famous hospitality of the French that I’ve heard so much about.

“No, they got the metric system there, they wouldn’t know what the putain a Quarter Pounder is.”
“What’d they call it?”
“Royal Deluxe.”

We made it back to the hotel with ten minutes to spare for our six o’clock meeting with our guide, Sylvia Frappier. The theme of the meeting was “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.” She gave us sleeping bag liners and towels after the company told us we had to bring them ourselves. The biggest issue was that they would provide the hiking poles. Non. In the end, she found us rental poles and somebody got their Black Diamond poles that they had been wishing for. We met later for a paid dinner at the restaurant specializing in alpine cuisine and retired to our rooms to start our TMB trek tomorrow.
